How to make it

  1. Chill four long dessert dishes or shallow bowls in the freezer for a few minutes so the ice cream does not melt too quickly once assembled.
  2. Peel each banana and slice it in half lengthwise, then lay the two halves against the sides of each chilled dish to form a long cradle for the ice cream.
  3. Nestle one scoop each of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream in a row between the banana halves in every dish.
  4. Drizzle the ice cream topping sauce generously over the scoops, letting it run down the sides.
  5. Pipe or spoon a swirl of whipped cream over each scoop, then scatter the sprinkles and chopped nuts on top.
  6. Finish each banana split with a maraschino cherry pressed gently into the whipped cream and serve immediately while the ice cream is still firm.
