How to make it

  1. Preheat the oven to 175 C (350 F) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper; use unsalted, plain stock with no onion or garlic since those are not safe for dogs.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, rolled oats and bran cereal until evenly combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the egg, then stir in the peanut butter (make sure it is xylitol-free, as xylitol is toxic to dogs), vegetable oil and about half of the stock until smooth.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir, adding the remaining stock a little at a time, until a stiff dough forms that holds together without being sticky.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and roll it out to about 1 cm (1/4 inch) thick, then cut into shapes with a cookie cutter or into small squares with a knife.
  6. Arrange the biscuits on the prepared sheets and bake for 30 to 35 minutes until firm and lightly golden.
  7. Turn off the oven and leave the biscuits inside for another hour to dry out and harden, which keeps them crunchy and shelf-stable.
  8. Cool completely before serving, and store in an airtight container; offer as an occasional treat rather than a meal replacement.
