How to make it

  1. Preheat the oven to 190C (375F) and lightly butter a medium baking dish.
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the egg noodles for about 1 minute less than the package directs, so they stay slightly firm; drain well and return them to the pot.
  3. Drain the tuna thoroughly and flake it into chunks, then stir it into the noodles along with the cream of celery soup, milk, frozen vegetables, half of the grated cheddar, the black pepper and a little salt until evenly combined.
  4. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish, spread it level, and scatter the remaining cheddar over the top.
  5. Bake uncovered for 20 to 25 minutes, until the casserole is bubbling at the edges and heated through.
  6. Sprinkle the crispy fried onion rings evenly over the surface and return to the oven for 5 more minutes, until the topping is golden and crisp.
  7. Let the casserole rest for about 5 minutes before serving so it sets slightly and is easier to spoon out.
