How to make it
- Divide the minced beef into four equal portions and shape each gently into a patty about 2 cm thick and slightly wider than your buns, pressing a small dimple into the centre of each so they cook flat.
- Season both sides of the patties generously with the salt, pepper and garlic powder just before cooking.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a heavy frying pan or grill over medium-high heat until very hot.
- Cook the patties for about 4 to 5 minutes on the first side without pressing them, then flip once and cook a further 4 to 5 minutes, until well browned, the juices run clear and no pink remains; for safety the centre should reach at least 71 C (160 F) on an instant-read thermometer.
- Lay a slice of cheddar on each patty for the final minute of cooking and cover loosely so the cheese melts, then transfer the patties to a plate to rest briefly.
- Lightly toast the cut sides of the hamburger buns in the same pan while you slice the tomato and onion and rinse the lettuce.
- Build each burger on a toasted bun base with lettuce, a cheeseburger patty, tomato and onion, then add condiments of your choice and close with the bun top.
